Zürich’s Interactive Chandelier Nominated for Xaver Best Consumer /POS Events Award

Whether you arrive at Zürich’s impressive main railway station on foot, by bus or by train, the extraordinary site of a 17m chandelier is guaranteed to catch your eye.

Weighing in at approximately 1.8 metric tonnes, 25,000 LED light points send showers of light down hundreds of hanging strands. Each of the LED-lights can be individually controlled, and rather than restricting the lighting colours and effect to staff, Zürich HB decided to turn the chandelier into an interactive experience for visitors.

A 75-inch touchscreen at the group meeting point in the station controls the chandelier’s lighting effects as well as providing practical information about rail traffic. Visitors can first choose their preferred language, then animated effects, and finally, the colour. At the touch of a button, the chandelier comes to light, much to the delight of visitors in view of the visual extravaganza.

Thanks to the longevity and energy-efficiency of the LEDs, the chandelier represents not only digital innovation and interactive engagement, but also ecological foresight for a display that promises further surprises in the coming years.

The chandelier, which was designed by Aroma on behalf of the SBB and produced by MK Illumination, has been nominated for the Xaver Award of Best Consumer / POS Events for 2018, and we looking forward to seeing the outcome of the voting.

You can see learn more about the chandelier and vote for it on the Xaver website, and you can visit their voting page to view and vote for other nominations in the live communications space.
