Gazprom’s Northern Lights

When one of the largest gas and oil companies in the world, Gazprom, wanted to decorate their headquarters in St. Petersburg, they wanted to create a truly extraordinary display on their external façade, something that was modern and digital to represent how the company is perceived in the market.

The result was never-before-seen, custom-designed festive display of the Northern Lights. The MK Illumination Russia team used 180 iString Lites, positioned at varying heights (ranging from 4-8 meters in height) across the length of the façade to emulate the waves of the natural wonder. Thanks to the use of RGB technology and some technical wizardry, the team individually programmed every light in every string individually (over 10,000 light points in total) to create the rippling waves of color that we associate with the Aurora Borealis.

Gazprom was incredibly pleased the end-resulted and pledged to illuminate the semi-open indoor spaces in their headquarters in future years so that their employees could enjoy the  view of the Northern Lights from both indoors and outdoors.
