Shopping Centers & Malls, Retail Real Estate - Denmark, Denmark
In 2017, Kolding Storcenter wanted to do something unsual to stand out from the crowd, attract more visitors and keep them in the center for longer over the holiday season.
They wanted to build on their existing path to using more technology, using their friendly, free-ranging robot, as a starting point.
The idea of an “urban Christmas” came up in discussions and the result was a Christmas lighting and decorative display never seen before in Denmark – or indeed, anywhere else! Technology, lighting, animatronics, robotics and vintage elements came together to attract and engage visitors and encourage them to interact with the experiential displays.
Visitors were treated to a “Christmas tree” of white boxes with in-built digital screens and glittering with LED lights. Each screen in the “tree” could be programmed to show advertisements from the center, and visitors taking selfies could also use a special hashtag to have their photos uploaded and displayed briefly on the tree instead.
Visitors walking through the tree’s core were treated to animatronic elves and a shower of snow, and were encouraged to make a wish by throwing a coin into the interactive “wishing well”.
Dotted around the main tree were smaller trees made from second-hand and vintage materials, and visitors were fascinated by the used-book tree, the used-jeans tree, the used-shoes tree the used-shirts tree, and the tree made from old teddy bears and pacifiers (dummies).
Throughout the store, traditional festive lighting mixed with the unusual mix of string lights and custom decorations made from old denim creating an experience that was unique, engaging and magical.
